Continuing the Mardi Gras Legacy: Ole Biloxi Marching Club Embraces Coastal Life

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – Witnessing the Ole Biloxi Marching Club distribute flowers during parades throughout South Mississippi is a time-honored tradition synonymous with Mardi Gras itself.

For Rusty David, a dedicated member, the essence of the Ole Biloxi Marching Club encapsulates joy, spreading positivity, and fostering a festive Mardi Gras spirit among the spectators.

Since its inception in 1975, the Ole Biloxi Marching Club has been instrumental in spreading Mardi Gras joy along the Coast. Rusty David proudly holds the distinction of being the sole member to participate in every procession since its establishment.

David reflects on the evolution of the club over the past 49 years, noting that they have honed their approach to perfection over time.

Prior to each parade, meticulous preparations are made to ensure that the trailer accompanying them is well-equipped, featuring essential amenities such as a restroom and a fully stocked bar. These pre-parade rituals are essential to delight the exuberant onlookers.

“You’ve got to be giving out flowers and beads or they’re going to get you,” David emphasized.

The act of personally distributing hundreds of flowers holds a special significance for the club members, symbolizing beauty, well-being, and joy, particularly when presented to women.

Apart from the floats of the Gulf Coast Carnival Association and the Biloxi High School Band, the Ole Biloxi Marching Club holds the distinction of being the longest-standing participant in the city’s traditional Mardi Gras day parade.

Sometimes, the exchange of a flower is accompanied by a heartfelt kiss, adding a personal touch to the festivities.

Donnie Handler, a former float rider turned marching club member, cherishes the opportunity to forge genuine connections while traversing the parade route, especially when witnessing the joy on the faces of children and individuals with disabilities upon receiving a flower.

The club’s commitment to the parade extends beyond mere participation, as they prioritize creating memorable experiences for parade-goers, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and genuine interactions.

The Ole Biloxi Marching Club’s unwavering dedication to spreading joy and fostering community spirit is palpable, ensuring that each parade is a memorable celebration for all involved.

Following their appearance in the Gulf Coast Carnival Association Parade, the Ole Biloxi Marching Club will continue to captivate audiences in future events, including St. Patrick’s Day parades in Biloxi and Jackson.
