Dragons Love Tacos” Takes the Stage: A Family-Friendly Theatrical Event in Duluth

A Magical Theatrical Experience for All Ages

The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Marshall Performing Arts Center is set to transform into a whimsical world where dragons roam, but only for a limited time. From February 16-24, the stage will come alive with the adaptation of Adam Rubin’s cherished children’s book, “Dragons Love Tacos.” This engaging production, presented by UMD’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, promises to delight audiences with both evening shows and weekend matinees.

Engaging Young Minds and Their Families

The plot centers around a boy and his dog who encounter a magical man through their TV, learning about the peculiarities of dragon behavior—most importantly, their love for tacos and aversion to spicy salsa. Director Matthew Olsen, utilizing his expertise as a visiting theater professor and UMD alumnus, has crafted a show that draws children and adults alike into a playful, imaginative experience. The performance is designed to keep even the youngest viewers captivated, incorporating vibrant costumes and dynamic staging that appeals to all ages.

Interactive and Educational Elements Enhance the Experience

Beyond the stage, the production extends its magical touch. Prior to the show, children are invited to participate in art activities organized by UMD’s Art in Elementary Education students, such as crafting paper plate taco props. Additionally, the audience can explore the intricate costumes and props up close in the lobby. Dramaturg Kate Warmka has integrated interactive features like post-show Q&A sessions to deepen the engagement between the audience and the cast, making the theatrical experience both educational and entertaining.

This adaptation of “Dragons Love Tacos” is not just a play; it’s an opportunity for families to enjoy a shared experience of creativity and fun, fostering a love for theater in the community while bringing the joyous spirit of the book to life on stage.
