Greg Berry’s Journey: From Basketball to FCA

Greg Berry’s impact was felt in various aspects of his life. He excelled not only as an athlete but also as a dedicated individual.

Starting his athletic journey at Manlius High School, Berry distinguished himself as an exceptional all-state player and the all-time leading scorer in basketball. His skills earned him a basketball scholarship to Bradley University, where he made history by being the last athlete to letter in three sports, which included golf and track. His remarkable achievements led to his induction into the school’s Hall of Fame.

Beyond his sporting accomplishments, Berry devoted himself to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, embodying his passion for both faith and athletics throughout his life.

Sadly, Greg Berry passed away at the age of 77 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on February 4. Despite battling kidney issues, he is fondly remembered for his character and athletic prowess.

Among Bureau County’s top scorers, Berry holds the impressive rank of No. 16, with a career total of 1,552 points. He consistently outshone his peers, clinching the title of the county’s top scorer for two consecutive years, notably achieving a scoring average of 24.7 points per game during his senior year in 1963-64.

His legacy extended beyond the basketball court, as evidenced by his enduring impact on those around him. Classmates like Sam Johnson and his brother, Norm Berry, also achieved the milestone of scoring over 1,000 points, reflecting the influence and talent that ran in the Berry family.

Colleagues and competitors alike recognized Berry’s exceptional abilities and character. Steve Doty, a former teammate at Manlius and Bradley, praised Berry’s offensive skills, describing him as a versatile player with a knack for scoring from various positions on the court. Doty highlighted Berry’s sportsmanship and overall persona, emphasizing his positive influence on those around him.

Tom Dobrich, who faced off against Berry on numerous occasions, recalled the challenges of guarding the formidable athlete. Despite the height difference, Dobrich admired Berry’s athleticism, shooting prowess, and composed demeanor on the court, showcasing his respect for Berry’s skills and demeanor.

Berry’s impact extended to his coaching career, spanning four decades across various collegiate institutions. His coaching journey took him to different states and countries, reflecting his commitment to developing young athletes both on and off the court.

A man of deep faith, Berry’s life mission transcended sports, as evident from his dedication to applying Biblical principles in all aspects of his life. His unwavering optimism and hope, rooted in his Christian beliefs, guided his actions and interactions with others, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.

In his final moments, Greg Berry’s legacy endures, with his life story serving as a testament to his faith, character, and lasting impact on the sporting community and beyond.
